Creating areas
To manage access to a physical location, Account administrators and Site owners can create areas in Genetec ClearID™ and associate them with Synergis™ doors and a Security Center system. Area owners manage the areas by defining policies, assigning managers, controlling access, and approving or denying requests.

In Security Center, nested areas can be used to logically group areas so that access can be automatically granted to people for associated nested areas when access is requested in Genetec ClearID™ for one of the nested areas.

- About areas
  In Genetec ClearID™, an area is a logical entity that defines the relationship between Synergis™ doors and area owners. Areas are managed by the area owner.
- Creating areas
  To manage access to a physical location, Account administrators and Site owners can create areas in Genetec ClearID™ and associate them with Synergis™ doors and a Security Center system. Area owners manage the areas by defining policies, assigning managers, controlling access, and approving or denying requests.
  - Adding doors to areas
    To support access requests and visitor invitations in Genetec ClearID™, add doors to the corresponding areas in Security Center.
  - Enabling visitor management for areas
    To allow guests to request visits to specific locations and define their approval workflows, Area owners or Site owners can enable visitor management for an area in Genetec ClearID™.
  - About nested areas
    In Security Center, nested areas can be used to logically group areas so that access can be automatically granted to people for associated nested areas when access is requested in Genetec ClearID™ for one of the nested areas.
  - Granting access to areas automatically
    To automatically grant people access to logically grouped areas, a Security Center administrator or system integrator can create nested areas for Genetec ClearID™ in Security Center.
  - Creating exceptions to the access request approval workflow
    To bypass standard approval processes and auto-approve specific roles or request types, Site owners or Area owners can create exceptions to the access request approval workflow in Genetec ClearID™.
- Adding area owners and managers
  To define area policies and manage access request approvals, Site owners or Area owners must first add Area owners and managers in Genetec ClearID™.
- Adding schedules to an area
  To define time constraints for when people can access a location, Area owners must add schedules to an area in Genetec ClearID™.
- Flagging required credentials for area access requests
  To alert stakeholders that employee access to areas like parking garages requires specific credentials, Area owners can flag those credential requirements in Genetec ClearID™.
- Configuring access request documents for areas
  To require employees to upload supporting documents such as driver's licenses or certifications when requesting area access, Site owners or Area ownes can configure access request documents for an area in Genetec ClearID™.
- Granting access to an area
  To authorize specific people or roles to enter a location during scheduled times, Area owners, Area managers, and Supervisors can grant access to an area in Genetec ClearID™.
- Reviewing area access
  To perform an audit or check who has access to an area, periodic reviews must be performed by an Area owner, Area manager, or Site owner. Reviews are performed one area at a time.
- Reviewing area access requests
  To manage area access requests, an Area owner, Area manager, a Role manager, or a Supervisor must review the pending approvals. They can then decide which requests to approve or deny.

About nested areas

In Security Center, nested areas can be used to logically group areas so that access can be automatically granted to people for associated nested areas when access is requested in Genetec ClearID™ for one of the nested areas.

Nested areas are useful for organizations with lots of restricted areas, lots of logical grouping, or area dependencies. For example, when secure areas require access to other areas to get to the secure area:

Example 1: Requesting access to a server room might automatically grant access to the floor that the server room is on.
Example 2: Requesting access to a restricted area might automatically grant access to the floor the restricted area is on, and also grant access to the building that the floor and restricted area are in.

In Config Tool, nesting areas using Parents or Children options in the Relationships section of the Area view do not inherit access.

Nest areas using Access rules options in the Relationships section of the Area view to inherit the required access. You can create nested areas to add access rules relationships for up to three logically associated areas. More than three areas nested together is not recommended.

Adding multiple access rules to an area creates the logical group association for nested areas. This relationship association ensures that the areas automatically grant access to the other associated areas when access is requested for one of the nested areas. By default, ClearID automatically creates access rules for each schedule that is added to an area.

If the schedules for any of the nested areas change, the area relationships (access rules) must be configured again.
